DIY Diaper Cream

My son is a pooping machine. He’s been that way from day one. And now that he’s a full-blown toddler, we have apparently entered a phase of life where we are not only pooping all the time, but we are pooping things that irritate our bottom if we are not changed immediately. {Strangely, his poops have become markedly less stinky, and sometimes he can poop and I won’t smell it so if he doesn’t tell me he did it, he ends up being poopy for a bit. #badmom} Also? This kid loves fruit. I already suffered horrendously when I let him over indulge in plums last year…. we had to make a diaper cream with alllll the baby-safe anti-fungal essential oils, switch to cloth diapers, use a Norwex cloth instead of wipes, do lots of naked time, soak in Epsom salts and baking soda with a dash of lavender, and use diluted Digize on his tummy! So now I’m much more careful about his fruit intake. He can only have ONE mandarin orange or clementine in a day (no matter how much he begs for more) and I already had the regret of letting him overdo it with watermelon a few weeks ago. Not sure what kicked the most recent booty irritation, but I was clean out of diaper oil so I decided to 1.) make more and also 2.) try a recipe with more staying power.

My diaper oil that I have used since he was born was just coconut oil whipped up with a drop of Gentle Baby and a drop of Lavender. It makes a nice barrier, and works great to keep his bottom happy at night, but I felt like there must be a recipe that would create a better “coating,” if you will. I found this recipe, and combined it with suggestions from this book. Here’s how it went  down:
First you put 2 tablespoons of beeswax pellets in your pan and melt them.

That’s melted!

Then measure 3 tablespoons of shea butter…

And three tablespoons of coconut oil.

Add them to your melted beeswax and allow them to melt together.

Transfer the mixture to your mixer bowl and allow to cool.

Then whip it. Whip it good.

Finally, add your essential oils! 4 drops of Gentle Baby, 2 drops of lavender, 2 drops of German Chamomile, 1 drop of Cypress, and 1 drop of Melrose. Mix it a little more, then transfer into a 4 oz glass jar.

Ta-da! Homemade diaper cream!

We usually use this only at night and I feel good about the fact that his bottom is protected from his wet diaper while he sleeps, but if his bottom gets irritated and red from something he ate (and subsequently pooped), we use it throughout the day and things get better nice and quick. It’s more work than coconut oil + EOs, but in my opinion, it’s worth it!
